Myra Kaufman Artist's Biography

I have been an Artist in Residence at the Firestation Print Studio, Melbourne since 2008. Before embarking on studying for a Diploma of Visual Arts in 2004, I had been a language teacher in high schools and Adult education institutions. Since graduating with a DVA in 2007 I have been engaged full time with my Artwork, concentrating principally on printmaking using collagraphic and etching mediums. My earlier work , using collagraphic plates and stencils, explored the theme of family memory by using printed motifs inspired by the minutia and memorabilia hoarded over many years by my family. My multi layered prints display images of fragments of lace, discarded keys, maps, tailor's patterns, German text, Biblical Hebrew script, scraps of old music and imperial measurements.
In 2009 and 2010 I travelled in Italy and Spain where I spent time researching the lost Jewish communities of cities and towns such as Venice, Siena,Padua, Cordoba, Granada and Toledo amongst many more: communities which for hundreds of years,co-existed with Muslims and Christians. My most recent exhibition "Remnants of a Golden Past" ( June/July 2011) explored this theme using the mediums of collagraphy and copper plate etchings to incorporate decorative motifs, old text, designs from stucco work and tiles, embroidery patternwork and scrollwork from illuminated religious books.
I am currently continuing to work with smaller format copper etching plates to create images inspired by old Biblical manuscripts.
